Identify:

Writing white papers has been a difficult process. I keep thinking the more white papers that I write, the better I will get with the case study selection process. However, after writing three white papers, I still have to do extensive research before I choose a case that fits my thesis.

Explain:

Not that research for white papers is bad, in fact, research is a necessity. However, I thought the selection process would be faster with other white papers under my belt. Difficulties that I have found when writing my white paper are difficulty in finding a case study and clarity in my writing.

Finding a case study for this paper was easier than it had previously been, but the process was still difficult. After I found my premise, I needed to research areas in my profession that helped to prove my point through a real-world example. My premise is that people are anxious about expert intervention in scientific and technological fields due to the lack of communication. I emphasized that clear communication generates trust between two different communities. The case study I used to prove my point is the Yellowstone wolf extinction and their reintroduction through concise communication between experts and nonexperts alike.

In addition to the difficulty I face with finding a great case study, when I write, I have the tendency to be elaborate with my words. This vivid elaboration often loses my audience. This white paper has been especially difficult in regards to keeping my meaning clear and communicating in a precise way. I often wrote a sentence, read it out loud, and rewrote it in order to find the clearest way to say what I was meaning to say. Communicating over text and through voice are both very distinct lines of communication that I need to practice.

Question:

Does my difficulty on finding a case study have to do with lack of practice? If so, how many white papers do I need to write in order to get a firm hold onto choosing an accurate, reliable, and useful case study? Or does everyone have difficulty with this part of the white paper process too?
